Music Ministry

St. John the Baptist – St. Charles Borromeo

“The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value…”   (Sacrosanctum Concillium)

The musicians of St. John the Baptist and St. Charles Borromeo contribute a special and vital part of the liturgy and sacred rites which is offered with great joy and commitment to sharing their faith.  Drawing on both traditional and contemporary settings in a broad variety of styles, the choir provides special music as well as leading the sung prayers of the people in hymns and liturgy.  On a rotating schedule, more than a dozen cantors sing the Responsorial Psalm, Gospel Acclamation, and lead the music liturgy of the mass.  Occasionally, soloists and/or instrumentalists contribute to worship with music that inspires our prayers and liturgy.  One weekend a month, music at St. John’s is led by a guitarist, and two weekends a month and special Holy Days, music at St. Charles is led by our Praise Band.  At St. John’s, a two-manual pipe organ and grand piano support our singing and accompany the mass, while a digital organ and electric piano do the same at St. Charles Borromeo.

The All Saints, Brunswick, Parish Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings and sings regularly at the late Sunday mass, alternating between St. John the Baptist (11 am) and St. Charles Borromeo (10:30 am) churches in Brunswick.  The choir sings an SATB, SAB, or two-part mixed voice communion anthem each week during the choir year, September through June.  Prior to the 4 pm and midnight masses at Christmas, the choir provides 30-45 minutes of seasonally appropriate music.  It leads worship on Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil, and for both masses, 8 am. and 11 am., on Easter Day. Anthems are of various styles ranging from local composers to Mendelssohn, Mozart, Bach, Elgar, and Pergolesi.  The 25-30 members possess varying levels of music proficiency, some being non-readers to those experienced in singing oratorios.  Our music ministry seeks to lead the sung prayers of the people, and offers a community of faith to those who serve in this capacity.  The cantors (6:00 pm) and choir (6:30 pm-8 pm) rehearse on Wednesday evenings in the Parish Center at St. John the Baptist Church. There are no auditions, and previous musical training or experience is not required. For more information, please contact the Parish Office.
